이유성은 생각을 경유하지 않고도 부피를 지닌 형체를 만들어내는 캐스팅 특유의 과정에 주목한다. 그렇게 만들어진 형체들은 대체로 비어 있고 조용하며, 그 자체로 공간이 될 가능성을 내포한 몸이자 바탕이 된다. 인체 캐스팅 조각은 어떻게 그 몸을 계속 비워둘 수 있을지, 그 껍질에 누구와 함께 낙서할 것인지, 서로 다른 파편들이 직조되어 잠시나마 하나의 장소로 존재할 수 있을지, 그리고 그때 그곳에 어떤 공기가 만들어질지에 대한 이유성의 잠정적인 답변이다.
《대기》에서 이유성은 독립 미술공간 와이피씨 스페이스와 거주 공간을 기반으로 한 갤러리 엑스라지 두 곳에 라이프 캐스팅 연작을 펼쳐 놓는다. 서로 다른 규모와 밀도를 지닌 두 장소에서 관객은 작품과의 거리를 저마다의 방식으로 조정하며 자리를 차지하고, 두 장소 사이의 경로 또한 전시의 일부로 경험하게 된다. 이처럼 작품과 몸, 장소와 이동이 만들어내는 감각들이 축적되는 가운데, 하나의 몸이 공간으로 존재하는 방식에 대한 대화가 이어지기를 기대한다.
Eusung Lee focuses on the distinctive process of casting, which bypasses conscious deliberation in producing three-dimensional forms. The resulting forms are largely hollow and quiet, as bodies and grounds with the potential to become spaces in their own right. Lee’s life-cast sculptures offer provisional responses to a set of questions: how might such a body remain empty; with whom might one scribble on its surface; can disparate fragments be woven together to stand, however briefly, as a place; and what kind of air might then emerge there?
In “in the air,” Lee presents a series of life-cast works across two venues: YPC SPACE, an independent art space, and xlage, a gallery based in a residential setting. Within these two sites, each with a different scale and density, visitors are to adjust their distances from the works and occupy the spaces on their own terms, while the route between the two venues may also become part of the exhibition experience. As these encounters among works, bodies, places, and movement accumulate, they open up a conversation about how a body might exist as space.
